so you want to elope?
i already love that about you.

You’re here because you want to have an intimate experience focused on you both, without the pressure and rule book of a normal wedding.

You’ve got nothing to worry about, and I’m psyched!

hey there!
i’m james!

your elopement photographer, and biggest cheerleader.

It won’t surprise you, but I’m a huge adventure and nature nerd, so much so that I spent 6 months living in the jungles of Madagascar back in 2010!

Because of that, more times than not, I’ll take any excuse to get into nature and explore what is out there. I’ve always found myself constantly surprised by how many wonderful sights there are out there. I live a life of creativity and curiosity and believe in challenging the status quo. It seems to run in the family because my parents, and my sister decided to elope when they got married!

I’m into board games, camping, a nice whisky after a good hike, and bouldering! Give me street food over 5-star dining any day! I find myself constantly jumping through bushes, and running up mountains to get that perfect shot for my couples.

so you can start your marriage authentically.

Your day should be focused on your story and who you really are. Whether you are adventure lovers who love the idea of going kayaking in the morning followed by an afternoon ceremony and a sunset picnic, or homebodies who adore homemade pizza with their doggos and who want to elope with their favourite lake in the background.

The power is yours to get married however you’d like. This is a whole day dedicated to your story and your relationship.

You deserve to have a day where:

  • Every minute brings you joy and is precisely how you wanted to get married.
  • You can say your vows exactly how you’d love without fear or pressure from others to say anything but the heartfelt truth.
  • You can look back at it and feel absolutely no regrets.

I’m here to bring your vision to life, and I truly believe in supporting you to have the day you want.

acknowledgement of values.

acknowledgement of country.

I wish to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land I work on and meet others on, the Ngunnawal people.

I wish to acknowledge and respect their continuing culture and the contribution they make to the life of this city and this region.

I would like to acknowledge and welcome other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who may be part of any events I take part in.

I would also like to pay my respects to Elders past and present. Sovereignty has never been ceded.

It always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

I highly recommend that couples include an ‘acknowledgement of country’ as part of their welcome in their ceremony.

Whilst this may take a few lines and an extra minute, we are all on stolen land and paying respects to the original landowners is the least we can do.

Thank you for reading this.

values and language.

Who Shot The Photographer is an inclusive and welcoming business to everyone, no matter their gender, orientation, race, or background.

I will always aim to be inclusive and use phrases and words which reflect these values.

I want to pre-face that I am learning to use more gender-neutral terms, and that there may be phrases throughout this brochure / my communication with you that may be more gender-specific.
I work with a wide variety of people, and my aim with certain words being used is certainly not to offend.

So if someone identifies as gender-neutral, and there is a phrase such as ‘bridal’, please understand that this is a genuine mistake and one I will want to rectify.

I have gone through all materials to use as many gender-neutral phrases as possible.

Thank you for your understanding, and I am always open to being further educated on social issues such as this.

how the ‘unbundled’ process works.
Step by step of what I’ll do for you.

01.

let’s pick and date and general location.

I value listening to how you want your day to go down, and to problem-solve and provide actionable ways we can make that happen. Maybe you want to get married in a forest, but have no idea where to start? Fret not, I can sort logistics and create plans!

02.

i assist you in planning your day.

You deserve to have someone behind you who will be cheering you on however you want to say your vows and share your love. I’ll be here to support you however you want to start your marriage.

03.

i’ll help you with recommended local vendors.

The landscapes we are attracted to are as personal as the stories we share are. For when your wedding, I’ll sort the location scouting out and provide the perfect spots for you to enjoy your time together.

04.

i’ll create a timeline for you day.

From vendor recommendations to timeline planning and advice, I’ll have your backs when it comes to creating an experience that is comfortable, relaxed, and fits your needs.

05.

give you a ‘best friend’ experience on your day.

I believe that the day you get married should be an authentic adventure where you can be yourselves. I’m not the sort of photographer to yell ‘KISS!’ or ‘LOOK LIKE YOU LOVE EACH OTHER!’.
Instead, I prefer gentle prompts and a relaxed approach to really bringing out the raw emotions in your both. No posing experience necessary.

06.

you’ll receive your gorgeous photos

The images and art I’ll create from your wedding will tell the story of who you are and what went down on the day. Landscapes, emotions, laughs, and the real you is what I’m interested in. So, when you look back in 20 years, you’ll remember how you felt on the day, rather than someone who barked orders at you to fake PDA which wasn’t even you.

07.

order your albums and prints.

Turning your house into a home with stunning and personalised art is one of the most rewarding ways to celebrate your story. I specialise in creating some of the very best museum-grade art pieces for you. I can even show you to scale how certain images would look in your home, so you’d be able to have complete confidence in how your final art pieces would look in your home.

James (the awesome dude behind Who Shot The Photographer) captured our elopement in Canberra earlier this year, and man… wow. In case anyone reading this is facing the conundrum of really wanting photos from their wedding day while also being a bit awkward and camera shy (like I was) – this is the photographer for you!

From our very first conversation, James put us totally at ease. He’s the kind of person you feel like you’ve known for years rather than a few days or weeks, all while maintaining complete professionalism. He helped us choose the perfect location for our elopement, plan our timeline so we got to have exactly the day we wanted, and helped us to feel comfortable and excited throughout the big day itself. I was pretty nervous about having a photographer around for the whole day given my usual feelings of self consciousness around a camera, but I had nothing to worry about – I have never felt more relaxed knowing someone was taking photos, which was entirely down to James’ relaxed, fun attitude toward the whole thing. My husband and I cannot imagine a more perfect day, and we will cherish those memories for the rest of our lives.

… and then we got the photos back and they are absolutely gorgeous! We’re beyond delighted with how they turned out, and can firmly attest that James is an absolute wizard. Whole-heartedly recommend Who Shot The Photographer to anyone considering a small wedding or elopement. You won’t regret it!

My husband and I knew we wanted to elope, and we knew we wanted to have some kind of adventure in nature somewhere, we just didn’t know how… and then we found James. James gave us so many options for places to go, and at what times, he told us about AirBnb’s and vendors for hair, suits, dresses, flowers, even where we could buy beer to drink after the hike! It was amazing. He’s a wedding planner AND a photographer. For us we just wanted a relaxed day, to hang out with one another, and then go for a hike to get married, and James facilitated just that! We hiked up Mount Franklin, but James RAN up Mount Franklin. The man puts in WORK to get you the most spectacular photos you could imagine.

Once we finished our ceremony at the top (of which you don’t even notice that James is running around taking photos!), we cracked open a beer, and then James whipped out a drone! It was entirely unexpected but so much fun (u0026amp; the photos were INSANE!!!). James has a fantastic balance of letting you and your partner just interact candidly, pulling out beautiful photos from those interactions (so you don’t have posed photos), but also doing what he affectionately calls art wank, which gets you AWESOME artistic photos.

Those photos aren’t necessarily posed so much as James is just framing photos in a way that is truly gorgeous. On top of all of that James is just a wonderful person. He is kind and easy-going. He makes sure you’re relaxed and happy with everything, checks in, and brings you a sense of calm if anything might go awry. He’s incredibly easy to talk to, and sets a vibe that is so joyful you can’t help but smile!! If you want your wedding day to be one that is both relaxing and adventurous, and you want someone to capture all the authenticity of that day, then James is your man. Couldn’t recommend him more highly.

From our first meeting with James to COVID cancelling our initial wedding, rescheduling and then to receiving the photos of our wedding day – he was amazing. The support, communication, enthusiasm, unwavering energy and professionalism was all fantastic. James’ use of natural light and the environment made the photos so so beautiful.

James allowed my beautiful wife and I to be ourselves and relax in front of the camera. I have been part of some wedding shoots before and it has always felt extremely rigid and forced. James made us feel so comfortable, like we were out walking with a friend who just happened to be taking some absolutely gorgeous photos of us. Something that really drew my wife and I to James was the warmth he has in his photos, where the entire scene is a celebration of the relationship.

James managed to capture us in front of a camera, looking natural and in love and he used the world around us to tell this story too. These photos are a perfect memory of the day which we will cherish forever. We have James to thank for this, and we are so happy we chose him to capture our day. Thank you, James.

tell the whole story.
the ultimate experience.

It might sound a bit wild to start with; an all day elopement being documented.

However, when thinking about going big on your wedding, it doesn’t have to involve feeding 200 people, hiring a huge venue, and hiring loads of vendors to suit the family.

I recommend having your awesome adventure documented, so that you’re instead going to have:

  • THE WHOLE STORY OF HOW YOU GOT MARRIED.
  • THE ULTIMATE WAY TO REMEMBER ONE OF THE BEST DAYS EVER.
  • A WAY THAT FRIENDS AND FAMILY CAN EXPERIENCE THE DAY.
  • A WAY TO RELIVE THE EMOTIONS OF THE DAY, AND NOT JUST THE CEREMONY.

what would be your idea of the most enjoyable day ever, from sunrise to sunset?

, Pricing – Elopements JAPAN

this isn’t about having an all day ‘photoshoot’.
this is about documenting your journey.

The truth is that if I had someone yelling out poses to me for 12 hours, I’d hate it. Trust me.

However, the reason you are eloping isn’t to have an all day photoshoot. The reason you are getting married is to celebrate your story and your love, in an authentic and personal way.

I’m coming along for the ride just to document you having the most awesome and intimate day ever. The focus is on you, but you only have to focus on each other.

not sure how much time you need?
an example timeline.

Most couples choose to have a full-day elopement with me.

A full day?! How does that work? How does the day go?

Well, friend, let me give you an example timeline from a real life couple, Kirsty and Matt, who had a full-day elopement documented.

  • 12.00pm – James arrives at Kirsty and Matt’s cosy AirBNB (one of the recommendations in the vendor’s pack) for some getting ready photos of the couple having a relaxed time.
  • 1pm – It’s time for the first look! Matt is waiting with the backdrop of the snowy mountains in the background, waiting for Kirsty to come up behind him and tap him on the shoulder for the big reveal!
  • 1.30pm – After some more excitement and sharing words of ‘DAMN’ to each other’s amazing appearance, it’s time to head off for a kick-ass hike in the snowy mountains.
  • 2.30pm – Arriving at Charlotte’s pass, it’s time for us all to have a great hike out in the mountains, complete with stops along the way to explore their story and capture them in some of the most badass wild spots in the mountains.
  • 4.30pm – Kirsty and Matt have arrived at a stunning lake in the snowy mountains, giving us some time to unwind after the hike and kick back, before heading back to the main elopement spot where their friends and family are waiting…
  • 6.30pm – We all arrive back at the start of the hike, after enjoying the sun drop down across the land, painting the snowy landscape in warm tones, to see Kirsty and Matt’s friends and family waiting for them, eager eyed.
  • 7.00pm – It’s time for the ceremony; Kirsty and Matt welcome their closets friends and family to witness them sharing their tearful vows and some special news…they are also expecting a baby!
  • 7.30pm – The ceremony wraps up, and it’s time for some relaxed family photos and candid photos as Kirsty and Matt chill with their family.
  • 8:00 pm – The day wraps up, with Kirsty, Matt and co heading back up to the car park and onto Jindabyne for an epic celebration worthy of their elopement!

When my partner and I got engaged, we knew throwing a big traditional styled wedding just wasn’t for us. But we were unsure of how to go about doing a wedding more suited to our style. After some research online, we came across James’s website. It covered everything we needed to know about eloping and, honestly, sounded perfect. We spoke with James on the phone, and he answered any concerns we had with doing a wedding like this. He was so kind and full of energy. We felt like we were talking to an old friend! So it was a no brainer we wanted to hire him to help us pull this whole thing together. Throughout the planning process, we received a lot of emails and texts back and forth, so we never felt in the dark about anything. From the start, it was smooth sailing and very easy working with James. When our big day finally rolled around, we got to meet James for the first time in person, and he was just awesome. We had the pleasure of working with him for 8hrs, and I don’t think there was one second of that time where he wasn’t full of energy and excitement for us. James helped us decide on our location at Charlotte Pass, where we did a 10km hike before our ceremony, and our closest friends and family waited to meet us in the valley at sunset. The day was just perfect. We had sooo much fun and didn’t feel awkward or stressed at all during the day. We said multiple times during the day that we wish we could do this every year! It was so special and fun, and we couldn’t be happier with how our photos turned out. We had 20 guests for the ceremony, and they all said how beautiful it was. Even people we were worried about offending by not inviting them were incredibly happy for us, for doing it the way we wanted. Now that we have our photos, we’ve been able to share them with everyone, and we have received so many compliments on how stunning they are and how wonderful our day looked 😊 If you are considering eloping or doing a small wedding like we did, I would 100000% recommend hiring James to be your man. He is the best, we couldn’t recommend him enough!!

Let’s chat about your experience

you’re one step closer to choosing to elope

I’ll help you figure out where you want to get married, what you would like to
do when you get there, and exactly how much coverage will feel perfect.

frequently
asked
questions.
your questions answered by me.

You’re naturally going to have a few questions about the whole process. I’m here to give you an answer to anything you’re wondering about.

Absolutely! This is a core part of the service I provide for you! As soon as we get the ball rolling, you’ll receive a questionnaire to complete so that I can get the best idea of where you’d ideally love to elope! Then I’ll come back with some of the most awesome suggestions for yourselves.

The best way to understand what may suit you best would be to jump on a phone call with me, so I can get an excellent understanding of what your perfect day would look like. I want to find what package suits you best, and you can always add more time later down the line when we come to timeline planning too.

If you would love them to, then absolutely, yes! A big part of eloping is to have your day how you want, so as long as you would love other people there, they are more than welcome!

Absolutely 200% not at all. I have done many elopements with couples who are expecting, and because of my elopement planning process, this is something that I can consider when suggesting suitable locations.

Yes you would! Whilst many couples do love to include a hike as part of their elopement experience, the main thing is that you’re doing what you love and which suits you. I’ve done plenty of great elopements where couples have simply taken a quiet day at home, followed by a sunset ceremony up a local nature reserve (within easy drive).

Yes, children and doggos are most welcome! They are family after all! I curate your locations and day to ensure that everything will be suitable for whoever you’d love to bring. Whilst National Parks may limit dogs and other pets, I will be able to scout out other locations which would be suitable.

You can choose to hike in your wedding attire if you’d like to, and there’s never any pressure! However the good news is that there are great ways to fold up your wedding clothing neatly into your rucksack so that it isn’t damaged when arriving at your destination! I also have lots of recommendations for wedding dresses and suits which work best with eloping!

The beauty of eloping is taking Mother Nature at her face value. Sometimes it absolutely will end up raining, but the best news of all? You’ll have an awesome time. When it comes to logistics, you won’t be losing any sleep over this, as it isn’t uncommon for me to rework a timeline if it turns out a blizzard has rolled into town, or a local forest is on fire (2019 bushfires were a big learning curve for this)! If you want to see some galleries where couples have eloped in the rain, I’d be more than happy to share these!

This is a personal choice, and there are reasons why you would and wouldn’t want one. If you are wanting to share your vows at the top of a mountain after a 3 hour hike, very few celebrants would be happy to go on a journey this long. In this case, a courthouse legal wedding could be done beforehand, with vows being withheld for the spot you want to share your words. To be honest, the most important part of an elopement are the vows that you’ll share together! However if you would love to have everything done on the day, and have a spot that isn’t too far from the main road, then a celebrant may be better for you!

Nope. Whilst I understand that some elopements can be short and sweet, I believe that offering you a more complete service to honour your story is what I’m best at. This is why my minimum coverage is 2 hours.
