Kyoto.
The Cultural Heart – ancient lanes, temple shadows, lantern light.
fushimi inari shrine.
Thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up a mountainside. I know the quiet upper sections most tourists never reach – early morning here is completely otherworldly.
kiyomizu-dera.
Panoramic views over Kyoto from ancient wooden temple platforms. Best in autumn when the hillside turns deep red and amber. The approach through Higashiyama stone lanes is as beautiful as the temple itself.
arashiyama bamboo grove.
Towering bamboo that filters light into something cinematic. Arrive at first light and you will have it largely to yourself. The surrounding area – Tenryu-ji garden, the riverside – gives multiple distinct settings in one location.

A rare combination of Japanese, French, and English landscape design. The cherry blossoms here in spring are among the best in Tokyo. Genuinely stunning late-afternoon light year-round.
koishikawa korakuen garden.
One of Tokyo’s oldest and most atmospheric traditional gardens – meandering ponds, stone bridges, manicured hills. Significantly less visited than the main parks and outstanding for intimate detailed photography.
Hakone.
Sacred Landscape – Mount Fuji, mist, lake, mountain silence.
lake ashi.
The iconic view – Mount Fuji’s silhouette rising above the lake surface in the early morning before clouds build. I time arrivals around the mountain’s visibility patterns. On a clear morning this location is unlike anywhere else on earth.
hakone shrine.
The famous torii gate standing in the lake at Motosu. Quiet pre-dawn access gives you the reflections and stillness that disappear the moment the first tour boats launch. Worth the early start every time.
gora park.
A French-inspired garden with Mount Fuji views and significantly fewer crowds than the lakeshore. Seasonal flowers, open lawns, and a relaxed atmosphere that helps couples settle quickly.
Okinawa.
Tropical Paradise – beaches, coral, dramatic coastal cliffs.
kouri island beach.
A heart-shaped beach on a small island connected to the mainland by a long bridge. Turquoise water, white sand, and an atmosphere that feels genuinely removed from the rest of Japan. Best for couples who want warmth and colour.
cape manzamo.
A cliff-top headland above the Pacific Ocean – dramatic coastal scenery, wide open sky, and clean ocean light. Ideal for couples who want scale and natural drama rather than a cultural setting.
ishigaki island.
Remote, coral-fringed, and genuinely secluded. The water is extraordinary. For couples who want a Japan elopement that feels like a private island escape – this is the one.
Nikko.
Mountain Majesty – waterfalls, ornate shrines, ancient cedar forest.
toshogu shrine.
One of Japan’s most ornate shrine complexes set among ancient cedar trees. The detail in the architecture is extraordinary and the surrounding forest keeps the light soft and dramatic.
lake chuzenji.
A high-altitude mountain lake with reflective still water and mountains rising behind it. Autumn transforms this location completely – one of the most genuinely stunning autumn landscapes I have shot in Japan.
kegon falls.
One of Japan’s most dramatic waterfalls – a 97-metre drop with mist and raw power. The viewing platforms give you the falls as a backdrop for portraits with genuine scale and drama.
nara.
Ancient Wonder – free-roaming deer, bronze giants, stone lanterns.
todai-ji temple.
Home to one of the world’s largest bronze Buddha statues. The scale creates a genuinely awe-inspiring backdrop. The grounds at golden hour give remarkable depth and mood.
nara park.
The deer are friendly and genuinely add something no other Japan location offers. Wide open parkland, soft light, and an ancient temple behind – one of the more relaxed and joyful locations to spend an afternoon.
kasuga taisha.
Hundreds of stone lanterns lining moss-covered forest paths. Ethereal in the early morning. The approach through the forest before reaching the shrine is one of the most atmospheric walks in Japan.
Yamagata.
Winter Dream – snow, lantern-lit ryokan, mountain temples.
ginzan onsen historic town.
A Taisho-era hot spring town of wooden ryokan lining a narrow river, softly lit by lanterns reflected in the snow. If you want a Japan winter elopement this is the location. It looks like a film set and feels completely timeless.
yamadera (risshaku-ji temple).
A temple complex perched on a mountainside reached by 1,000 stone steps through ancient cedar forest. Remarkable views from the top – stunning under snow in winter, extraordinary in autumn foliage.

The riverside path through Ginzan Onsen gives you the full composition – traditional architecture, frosted water, lantern reflections. Particularly powerful in early morning or at dusk when the light on the snow turns warm.
